What Are Alloys Of Aluminum Armour Tape

06.01.2026

In the manufacturing industries of power cables, communication optical cables, and special cables, aluminum armour tape is an indispensable core protective material. It is mainly used for the outer armor structure of cables, resisting external forces such as compression, tension, and abrasion, while also isolating them from moisture, acid, and alkali corrosion, protecting the internal conductors and optical fiber units, and extending the service life of cables under complex conditions such as outdoor, underground, and underwater use.

5052, 5154, and 5154A all belong to the Al-Mg series of rust-resistant aluminum alloys, with magnesium as the main alloying strengthening element. Unlike ordinary pure aluminum tape, these alloys perfectly meet the core requirements of armoring materials.

1. 5052 Alloy Aluminum Tape

5052 aluminum strip is the earliest and most widely used aluminum-magnesium alloy in the armored aluminum tape industry. Its magnesium content is lower than that of the 5154 series, and its overall performance is balanced with no obvious shortcomings, making it an entry-level general-purpose armoring material.

Core performance parameters: Tensile strength in the O state: 170-215MPa; Yield strength: ≥65MPa; Elongation: 12%-20%; Density: 2.68g/cm³; Moderate hardness; Cold and hot processing performance compatible with most conventional production lines.

Core advantages: Highest overall cost-effectiveness; Balanced corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability; Ample raw material supply; Transparent and low-fluctuation market prices; Strong compatibility with production equipment; Can be processed on low-speed, standard-precision production lines; Extremely low scrap rate.

Suitable scenarios: Primarily used for armoring and protecting ordinary power cables, indoor communication optical cables, low-voltage control cables, and pre-embedded cables in buildings; Suitable for projects without high-strength compressive requirements and in mild operating environments; Also a staple material for small and medium-sized cable manufacturers.

2. 5154 Alloy Aluminum Strip

5154 alloy, with an increased magnesium content compared to 5052 aluminium, is an upgraded armor-specific alloy. Its overall mechanical properties are superior to 5052 alloy, making it the preferred material for heavy-duty industrial cables.

Core performance parameters: Tensile strength in the O state ≥175MPa. Compared to 5052, yield strength and tensile deformation resistance are slightly improved, elongation is consistently above 15%, and impact and crush resistance are stronger, enabling it to withstand greater external loads.

Core advantages: High strength and high deformation resistance perfectly solve the problems of steel strip deformation and damage caused by dragging, deep burial, and backfilling with gravel during cable laying; upgraded resistance to seawater and chloride ion corrosion, with rust prevention performance superior to 5052; while retaining excellent bending and welding performance, suitable for complex cable armor structures.

Suitable scenarios: Primarily suitable for high-voltage power cables, buried long-distance transmission cables, outdoor overhead optical cables, and marine coastal communication cables; commonly used in engineering projects with high construction difficulty, numerous external interferences, and strong corrosive environments.

3. 5154A Alloy Aluminum Strip

5154A is an improved and iterative version of 5154 alloy, belonging to the national standard refined control alloy category. The production process strictly controls the content of trace impurities such as silicon and iron, optimizes the internal microstructure of the alloy, and addresses the minor shortcomings of the original 5154, making it a representative material for high-end armored aluminum strips.

Core Advantages: In addition to inheriting the high strength and high corrosion resistance of 5154, the material has a smoother surface, more uniform internal grain distribution, and is free of defects such as sand holes, cracks, and inclusions; it has stronger stability in cold forming, with a near-zero breakage rate under high-speed wrapping processes; and its fatigue resistance is upgraded, making it less prone to aging and embrittlement under long-term high and low temperature alternating environments.

Suitable Scenarios: Primarily used for high-end specialty cables, including submarine optical cables, military-grade cables, rail transit cables, and cables for chemically corrosive environments; suitable for high-end customized projects with stringent requirements for material consistency, service life, and finished product yield.

How to Choose the Alloy

1. Select based on working environment: For mild environments such as dry indoor environments and ordinary pre-buried installations, choose 5052 aluminum strip directly to control production costs; for outdoor open-air environments, damp soil environments, and mildly corrosive environments, prioritize 5154; for extreme environments such as near-shore salt spray, seabed environments, and highly corrosive chemical environments, 5154A must be selected.

2. Select based on load strength: For low-voltage lightweight cables without the risk of heavy crushing, 5052 aluminum strip for cable is sufficient; for high-voltage heavy-load cables, deep-buried installations, and frequently dragged cables, prioritize 5154/5154A to improve damage resistance.

3. Select based on production process: For ordinary low-speed production lines with high process error tolerance, all three alloys can be used; for automated high-speed wrapping and precision embossing production lines, it is recommended to prioritize 5154A to reduce the risk of tape breakage and scrap, and improve production efficiency.

4. Select based on project budget: Price ranking: 5052 < 5154 < 5154A. For general civilian projects seeking the best value for money, 5052 is the top choice; for industrial projects balancing performance and cost, 5154 is the best option; and for high-end special projects where cost is not a concern and the ultimate quality is the top choice, 5154A is the best option.
